The City of Clarkesville, along with The Georgia Historical Society, will dedicate a new historical marker at the Big Holly Cabin on Friday, June 9. The marker will serve to commemorate the historic pioneer cabin and the early settlers of Habersham County. The event is open to the public and will take place at 11 a.m. at the Big Holly Cabin located at 458 Jefferson Street in Clarkesville, Georgia.
The Big Holly Cabin is one of the oldest pioneer cabins remaining in the area. The hand-hewn single-pen log cabin was built by Haywood English in 1820. It was relocated to another land lot in 1849, where it remained in the English family until the 1980s. After it was restored by a descendant of Haywood English, the cabin was then donated to the City of Clarkesville and moved to its current location on the grounds of the Mauldin House and Gardens downtown.
In conjunction with the 200th anniversary of the forming of Clarkesville, the city is committed to maintaining this treasured landmark for years to come so that future generations will be able to learn from those that settled these lands that we now call home. Recent upgrades include new lighting and several new artifacts and exhibits inside the cabin.
