A local police officer’s family left reeling after a frightening accident is getting help from their Northeast Georgia neighbors and friends.
The young sons of Baldwin Police officer Joe Rivard and his wife Amanda were seriously injured last month in a dirt bike accident in Cleveland. 13-year old Skylar Bassett and 12-year old Joey Rivard were riding on a trail on May 22 when they accidentally clipped each other’s bikes, sending Skylar into a tree and Joey to the ground. The boys were life-flighted to Scottish Rite Hospital in Atlanta.

To help pay for the boys’ medical bills a benefit motorcycle ride is being held this weekend in Baldwin. It’s scheduled for Saturday, June 4 starting at 9 a.m. (last bike out by 10 a.m.) from Baldwin City Hall. The ride will circle through White County and Habersham and end up at the city park next to the Baldwin Police Department on Willingham Avenue where a $5 hot dog lunch will be served. Door prize drawings will be held at 1:30 p.m. (you must be present to win).
The cost to ride is $20, $25 for a rider +1 and $10 for vehicles. Organizers say all proceeds will go to Officer Rivard’s family.
Also on June 4th, Papa John’s pizza in Cornelia will donate 20% of individual sales if you mention the names “Joey and Skylar” when ordering.
