TMU Sports Information – The Truett McConnell wrestling team had a rough start in the opening rounds dropping many close matches, but many wrestlers bounced back and got back on the winning side of things.
Joe Hulen, who placed third at 141 lbs, lost in the opening round getting pinned in a scramble. He went on to win two straight to reach the consolation semifinals where he was able to avenge that opening round loss with a 9-3 victory. He would go on to defeat Cumberland University in the third place match by a score of 3-2.
David Capers suffered a quarterfinal loss to Reinhardt University. Capers would go on to win three straight matches to place third finishing the day 4-1.
Jacob Matheson had a breakout tournament as a freshman, scoring three pins to reach the finals at 184 lbs. Matheson would then go on to lose by a score of 10-3 to Brewton Parker in the finals finishing second place on the day.
“It was a rough beginning, I can admit I got really frustrated,” said head coach Marcus Cobbs, “but they stepped it up and started to wrestle much better. They continue to surprise me and fight and rise through adversity. I know they GOT MORE to come too.”
