Battle of the Lions

Demorest, GA – The Piedmont College men’s lacrosse team stayed close throughout the evening but saw the visiting Mountain Lions of Young Harris College pull away late for a 13-10 victory over the Lions at Walker Athletic Complex.

The contest was the regular season home finale for Piedmont College who has posted three of its four wins to this point season in the friendly confines of Walker Athletic Complex.  The lone win on the road for PC came in the season opener at Millsaps College, 19-10.

Piedmont’s Nick Green was the offensive leader on the night and a highlight reel as well scoring a team-high four goals on the evening including a 1st quarter SC Top Ten worthy score that saw the senior hit the top shelf with a around-the-back fire from distance.  Green’s goal at the end of the first tied the score at 3’s as Piedmont saw a 2-0 lead that started the contest erased with three straight from the visiting Mountain Lions.

Young Harris controlled the second quarter with four goals to Piedmont’s two though each squad posted a dozen shots each in the period.  With the Mountain Lions up by two at the break, 7-5, Piedmont’s Sumner Gantz started the 3rd quarter by cutting the margin to just one with his goal 33 seconds into the period.

Going goal for goal with each other in the third, PC still trailed by two at 9-7 heading into the final 15 minutes and, just as they did in the 2nd quarter, the Mountain Lions would separate themselves from the home team scoring four goals to the Lions’ three in the period.

Young Harris’ fourth and final goal in the last quarter came on a man-up situation, just the 17th man-up goal allowed by Piedmont in the 2015 season.  Though the visitors pulled away late for the win, the homestanding Lions saw another Patrick Ammons score worthy of a highlight reel when the senior scored with just over a minute to go to make it a 3-goal game.

Ammons scored another “whirling dervish” goal as referenced from the SportsCenter call when his goal from this past weekend’s contest made ESPN’s Top Ten Plays Saturday night. The goal was his tenth of the season and third over the last two games as Ammons led PC tonight with five ground balls as well.

For Green, the four goals on the night brought his season totals to 25 on the year, one shy of leader Taylor Carter in that category.  Green has accumulated an incredible 18 points over the last three games including a 5-goal performance against Methodist and a 3-goal, 4-assist showing against Greensboro on Senior Night this past weekend.

The loss moves Piedmont to 4-10 overall on the season as the Lions have now dropped seven of their last eight decisions in 2015.  Piedmont had won its only two meetings with Young Harris prior to tonight, a 7-5 win over the Mountain Lions in April of 2013 and a 4-goal victory win in March of last season.

The Lions will get back on the field for the 2015 regular season finale traveling to play at Huntingdon College this coming Saturday, April 11.  The first face-off with the Hawks is set for 5:00 pm ET, 4:00 pm CT.
