The State Fire Marshal’s Office is investigating the cause of a house fire that broke out over the weekend south of Cleveland, according to the White County Fire Department.
The resident, who was away from home when the fire broke out, called 911 just after 9 p.m. on August 17. They reported they returned to their home on Tow Drive south of Cleveland to find the house filled with smoke.
When White County firefighters arrived, they found the single-story house on a basement with smoke filling the upper level down to the floor. Firefighters traced the source to a fire in the basement. The successfully contained the fire and extinguished it.
Fire personnel then worked to ventilate the house and remove smoke. They remained on the scene for several hours.
“Thanks to their swift actions, the majority of the home was saved, preventing what could have been a far more devastating outcome,” says White County Public Information Officer Bryce Barrett.
No injuries were reported. The cause of the fire remains undetermined.
