Barrow County names parks and rec director

Barrow County has selected the finalist that will head its parks and recreations department.

Zach Churchill, who has over a decade of experience in similar positions, will step into the new role on March 3, county officials announced on Tuesday.

“Zach’s deep knowledge of recreational programming and commitment to community engagement will be a tremendous asset to Barrow County. As our county continues to grow, his expertise will be invaluable in expanding and enhancing our parks and recreational offerings,” Barrow County Manager Srikanth Yamala said.

Churchill currently serves as the deputy director of parks and recreation for Oconee County Government – where he oversees recreational programs, park facilities and departmental operations. His career also includes roles as a recreation manager and program coordinator with Oconee County, along with leadership positions in campus recreation and events at Lincoln Memorial University in Harrogate, Tennessee and Piedmont College in Athens.

“I am thrilled and grateful for the opportunity to join the Barrow County leadership team,” Churchill said. “I understand the gravity and importance of the position, and I look forward to working with staff to develop and enhance recreational opportunities that benefit residents of all ages.”

Churchill holds a master’s degree in business administration from Piedmont College and a bachelor’s degree in exercise science from Georgia Southern University. He is a Certified Parks and Recreation Professional through the National Recreation and Park Association and a Certified Youth Sports Administrator with the National Alliance for Youth Sports.

With his extensive background and leadership in parks and recreation, Churchill is expected to bring a fresh vision and innovative initiatives to Barrow County’s recreational programs and facilities.
