Sheriff: Deputy faces “long road of recovery” after being hit by vehicle

A Banks County deputy has a long road of recovery ahead of him after being hit by a vehicle during a foot chase Friday night in Commerce. Sgt. Joshua Robertson was struck and injured while he was chasing a suspect on foot in the area of Steve Reynolds Industrial Parkway at Highway 441. Robertson sustained multiple broken bones and fractures, according to Sheriff Carlton Speed. “It is estimated to be at least one year before he will return to doing what he loves at BCSO,” the Sheriff says.

Along with surgeries, healing, and physical therapy, the sheriff says Robertson will need other types of support. “Make no mistake, we will ensure that every step of the way he and his family have that support,” the Sheriff Speed posted to his official Facebook page.

BCSO: Suspect who fled traffic stop injured two other deputies

Robertson was in the process of arresting two suspects following a traffic stop when one of the suspects ran. A vehicle struck the deputy as he was chasing the suspect. Sgt. Robertson was transported to Piedmont Athens Regional Medical Center where he was listed in stable condition Friday night.

“We cannot begin to express how overwhelmingly thankful we are to still have him with us!,” Speed says. Sgt. Robertson’s family set up a Go Fund Me account for donations to assist in his recovery.

Officers apprehended the fleeing suspect and booked him into the Banks County jail.

The Georgia State Patrol Specialized Collision Reconstruction Team (SCRT) is investigating the incident.
