Bank robbery suspect returned to Habersham to face charges

The suspect in two recent bank robberies in North Georgia, including one in Cornelia, is now in jail in Habersham County. 47-year-old Michael Anthony Gordon of Cleveland was booked into the Habersham County Detention Center on June 4.

He was extradited to Georgia after being arrested in Colorado.

Gordon is charged in connection with the April 26 bank robbery of the South State Bank branch at Ingles grocery store in Cornelia. He’s also wanted in connection with the April 5 robbery of United Community Bank in Clermont.

“I am currently unclear on the details of his capture in Colorado,” says Cornelia Police Chief Chad Smith. “However, I am extremely proud of this police department in its response to this crime and their ability to identify and have warrants issued on Mr. Gordon so quickly.”

Those warrants include charges for kidnapping, aggravated assault, armed robbery, cruelty to children first degree, possession of firearm or knife during certain crimes, possession of firearm by convicted felon, and theft by deception.
