Baldwin police chief defends former second-in-command against rumors

The officer who served as second-in-command at the Baldwin Police Department has resigned. Captain Israel Segers’ last day on the job was Friday, April 17.

In a statement issued to Now Habersham, Baldwin Police Chief Charlie Webb says Segers left the department “on  good terms with his integrity completely intact.”

Webb addressed rumors he’s heard circulating indicating Segers was fired. “Those rumors are completely false,” insists Webb, adding, “anyone who attempts to slander his name with these lies, have no idea what they are talking about.”

While Webb and city officials would not discuss the details surrounding Segers’ departure, Chief Webb does say his former captain is moving on to “bigger” and “better” opportunities. He adds those opportunities will allow Segers “to use his enormous skill set and knowledge in a way that is more rewarding to him and will undoubtedly improve his quality of life.”

Webb says Segers was a great asset to him during his tenure. “I will miss him and his friendship very much.”

The chief is holding off on naming a successor to Segers. He says Baldwin’s police patrol lieutenants will fill the role for now.
