Police have identified the three people arrested in a domestic dispute that ended in gunfire early Sunday in the Brookcrest Haven neighborhood in Baldwin. Police Chief Charlie Webb says officers took into custody 32-year-old Rudolfo Mora, his mother, Maria Mora, age 59, and sister, 37-year-old Josafina Mora.
The arrests followed a family fight during which police say Rudolfo Mora fired a gun into the air.
“[The] investigation of the incident revealed that the victim had been at a party with her husband when they began to argue, so they returned home where the argument continued,” Webb says in a press release. “During the argument, the husband brandished a 9mm handgun and began to fire rounds into the air numerous times.”
Chief Webb says it was during this time that the victim’s mother-in-law and sister-in-law arrived at the residence and assaulted the victim.
Neighbors heard the screaming and gunshots in the area of 205 Brookcrest Haven around 1:48 a.m. and immediately called 911.
“We were inside the house and then hear her and her husband like arguing bad,” says Aiden Aguilar adding, “it [went on] for a while.” The disturbance turned frightening when suddenly, Aguilar says, “She screamed and then you heard six quick gunshots.”
“As soon as we heard it, that’s when we called the cops,” another neighbor tells Now Habersham.
Habersham 911 dispatched law enforcement to the scene after receiving “multiple” calls about the incident. Baldwin Police arrived within minutes. Habersham County Sheriff’s deputies and Alto and Cornelia Police also responded to the call, along with a county K9 unit.
When officers arrived, they met with the victim. Chief Webb says her face was scratched and bleeding from the fight with her in-laws. The initial investigation revealed twelve gunshots were fired into the air during the altercation, according to Baldwin Police Officer Tyler Moon.
The firearm and a box of 9mm ammunition were recovered from a closet inside the residence, as well as multiple spent 9mm shell casings from outside the residence.
There were no reports of any injuries from the gunfire.
Rudolfo Mora was arrested and charged with simple assault under the family violence act, discharging a firearm while under the influence of alcohol, discharging a firearm near a highway or street and disorderly conduct. His mother and sister were both arrested and charged with battery.
