GBI charges two men in Baldwin stabbing

A stabbing victim is recovering from his injuries following an early morning incident Thursday in Baldwin.

Baldwin Police responded to a report of a stabbing at 296 Willow Tree Avenue around 1 a.m. April 4, according to Chief Charlie Webb. When they arrived they found 28-year-old Matthew Cory Jones inside his home. He was suffering from multiple stab wounds to his abdomen.

Chief Webb says his department turned over the investigation to the GBI and Habersham County Sheriff’s Office. Investigators identified the suspects and located them around 6 a.m. Thursday in the Walmart parking lot in Dahlonega. The GBI identifies the suspects as 27-year-old Tidous Mitchell Thomas of Madison and 29-year-old Jonathan Michael Wallis of Lawrenceville.

GBI agents and Lumpkin County Sheriff’s deputies arrested Thomas and Wallis for aggravated assault. Officers transported the two men to the Habersham County jail where they’re now waiting on court proceedings. Bond has not been set.

EMS transported Jones to Northeast Georgia Medical Center in Gainesville where he underwent surgery. He’s listed in stable condition, according to GBI spokesperson Nelly Miles.

Officials have not released any information about a possible motive in the stabbing. The investigation is ongoing and Miles says additional charges may follow.
