Authorities identify body found floating in Lake Lanier

Authorities have released the name of the man whose body was found last week floating in Lake Lanier. The GBI Crime Lab identifies him as 42-year-old Nermin Rustempasic of Duluth.

“According to the preliminary investigation, there were no immediate signs of trauma to the body and no initial evidence of foul play,” says Hall County Sheriff’s spokesperson Derreck Booth. He says Rustempasic owned a boat stored at Sunrise Cove Marina.

On Tuesday, September 14, someone on a personal watercraft spotted a body floating offshore near the Old Federal Campground and alerted authorities. Personnel from the Georgia Department of Natural Resources and the Hall County Sheriff’s Marine Unit recovered the body approximately 100 yards from shore.

There was no identification on the body and no other description given other than that of a white male. Officials said it appeared he had been in the water for approximately a week.

The GBI conducted an autopsy. Investigators notified Rustempasic’s next of kin on Monday afternoon, September 20.

Booth says autopsy results and a toxicology report from the crime lab are still pending.
