A dramatic rescue unfolded on Tuesday, Feb. 25, when multiple emergency teams responded to a residential fire at 284 Apperson Drive in Barrow County, according to the Barrow County Sheriff’s Office.
At 1:13 p.m., deputies from the Barrow County Sheriff’s Office were called to assist the Winder Police and Winder Fire Departments with the blaze.
As crews raced to the scene, law enforcement was informed that an infant remained trapped inside the apartment and could not be reached. Upon arrival, officers from the Barrow County Sheriff’s Office and Winder Police Department immediately sprang into action, braving heavy smoke and perilous conditions in an attempt to save the child.
Several units were forced to retreat due to the intense smoke, but a deputy from the Barrow County Sheriff’s Office, aided by a Winder police officer, crawled through the smoke-filled building, followed the infant’s cries and successfully rescued the child from the fire.
In the aftermath, both the infant and several first responders, including the deputy and police officer, were treated for smoke inhalation and other medical needs. Authorities have not released the names of those involved, and the condition of the infant is not currently available, according to police.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
