Athens-Clarke County police are investigating the murder of a Winterville man.
Around 8:53 a.m. on Feb. 12, police responded to a report of a shooting in the 1200 block of Athens Road. There, they found 48-year-old Willie Antonio Jewell dead from a gunshot wound.
Police located the suspect at the scene and took him into custody. Athens-Clarke County Police Department (ACCPD) spokesperson Lt. Jody Thompson identifies him as 26-year-old Cedric Robbie Jones.
Police charged Jones with murder. According to online police records, this is the first murder in Athens this year. The city recorded nine murders last year.
