Athens-Clarke County Police have identified the man they say shot and killed himself in front of officers attempting to serve a search warrant on his property earlier this week. Richard King, 66, of Athens, died in the July 12 incident on Forest Road.
The search was in connection with a child pornography investigation against King. Officers were looking to seize electronic devices related to the case, says ACCPD Lt. Shaun Barnett.
When officers arrived around 8 a.m. Tuesday and encountered King, they say he had a firearm.
“ACCPD began de-escalation and negotiation efforts. However, the subject, a 66-year-old white male, suffered a self-inflicted gunshot wound,” Barnett said following the incident.
The Georgia Bureau of Investigation is investigating the shooting.
