The Athens-Clarke County Police Department continues its crackdown on criminal street gang activity. Officers arrested two more known gang members this week, police say. That brings to 23 the total number of gang-related arrests in the past several weeks.
The latest arrests were made Tuesday, January 25, when Demarkreon Reid, 25, and Travious Huff, 24, both of Athens, were taken into custody.
Police arrested Reid on existing felony probation violation warrants, a local bench warrant, and a federal warrant for being a felon in possession of a firearm. At the time of his arrest, Reid was out on bond for battery, simple battery, and disorderly conduct, police say.
According to ACCPD officials, Reid is currently on probation for possession of cocaine, possession of marijuana, simple battery, criminal trespass, and possession of drug-related objects.
Officers arrested Huff for possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime, and possession of marijuana with intent to distribute.
Huff is currently on probation for aggravated assault, criminal damage to property, simple battery, simple assault, pointing a gun or pistol at another, discharging a gun near a highway or street, and carrying a weapon without a license.
“Over the past several weeks, ACCPD has made 23 arrests of known gang members or associates. In addition to the arrests, ACCPD has seized 15 firearms, as well as drugs and stolen property,” says department spokesperson Lt. Shaun Barnett. “ACCPD is committed to protecting the community and will continue to focus our efforts on violent criminal street gangs.”
