The elections director of Athens-Clarke County’s government has stepped down to take a new job.

Sosebee formerly served as Hall County government’s elections director until she joined the Athens-Clarke County Election Office in 2016.

Athens-Clarke County Unified Government (ACCGov) Elections Director, Charlotte Sosebee, announced her resignation effective Feb. 21, as she transitions to a new role as Elections and Registration Manager with Dekalb County, Georgia. Sosebee, who has served as the director of the ACCGov Elections Department since December 2016, expressed pride in her work during her tenure.

“It has been an honor to lead the Athens-Clarke County Elections Department,” said Sosebee, “and I am incredibly proud of the work we have accomplished together in my eight years as director. As I transition to Dekalb County, I look forward to supporting the integrity of the election process in new capacities and exciting ways.”

During her tenure, Sosebee oversaw the organization and execution of 22 elections, ensuring that they were free, fair, and transparent. Notable accomplishments included the introduction of Spanish-language ballots, the launch of the first-ever “I Voted Early” sticker contest, and the expansion of advance voting opportunities through new polling locations, including the Tennis Center, Miriam Moore Community Center, and Extension Office.

Sosebee’s time as director was underscored by her receipt of federal certification through the Election Center, the highest professional recognition for election officials. She was also recently inducted into the National Hall of Fame of Election Officials.

“Charlotte will certainly be missed in Athens-Clarke County,” said Interim Assistant Manager Andrew Saunders, who supervises the Elections Department. “Her professionalism and dedication to the elections and voter registration process, particularly during a series of high-profile elections over the last eight years, was evident to anyone who interacted with her. We wish her well in her new position.”

In the interim, Elections Assistants Lisa McGlaun and Pam Long have been named co-interim directors of the ACCGov Elections Department. They will serve on a rotating three-month basis until a permanent director is selected through a national search by the Manager’s Office. Their leadership is expected to ensure continuity of operations, including through the upcoming June election.
