Snow showers are falling across parts of Habersham but the big story right now is the COLD. As of 12:30pm the temperature in Clarkesville was 33 degrees but the wind chill made it feel like 27 degrees. That’s bone-chilling. And it’s only going to get worse.
The National Weather Service has issued a wind chill advisory for tonight on into Thursday. Tonight’s low is expected to reach into the single digits and could fall as low as 6 degrees. Thursday’s high will be around 24 degrees with the low hovering around 8 degrees.
In advance of those temperatures, be sure to bring in your houseplants and pets, cover exposed water pipes and keep the cabinet doors to your indoor plumbing open so that heat can circulate around them.
For those at home still left without power, the cold weather shelter at First Baptist Church in Cornelia is open. The shelter offers warm showers and beds, hot meals and fellowship. You may go directly to the shelter to check in or call the church office at 706-778-4412 for more information. After hours, call FBC Cornelia pastor Dr. Eric Spivey at 706-499-9999.
Spivey released a post through social media earlier today saying the shelter needs volunteers to serve during the early morning (6-8am), day time (different shifts) and evening hours. Basic training will be provided. The church also requests donations of blankets, coats, and fresh fruit. If you can assist with any of these needs please contact FBC Cornelia.
The American Red Cross opened a cold weather shelter in Rabun County on Tuesday but that shelter has since been moved to Flowery Branch as thousands in Hall County remain without power. A spokesman at Clayton Baptist Church where the shelter was located says the Red Cross has indicated it will open another shelter in Rabun County. Now Habersham has reached out to the Red Cross for more information but has not received a return phone call.
