Area wrecks kill 1, injure 4 in White and Banks Counties

Two separate crashes in two Northeast Georgia counties Monday involved cars that split apart after impact.

The first accident happened Monday morning in Banks County near Homer. 54-year-old Elizabeth Young of Demorest was one of two people injured in the crash.

Young was traveling south on US 441/GA 15 when another driver failed to yield and pulled in front of her car from a turn lane at the Thompson Street intersection. Young attempted to steer the 2016 Acura TLX she was driving away from the 1999 Honda Civic but couldn’t, according to GSP. The Acura struck the Civic in the right front side. After impact, the Civic rotated and separated into two pieces.

The driver of the Honda, 56-year-old Homa Rastegari of Athens, sustained non-life threatening injuries. Banks County EMS transported her to Piedmont Athens Regional Medical Center for treatment. Young was transported to Northeast Georgia Medical Center in Gainesville, also with non-life threatening injuries.

Several hours later a Dahlonega woman was killed when her vehicle crashed and broke apart in White County.

51-year-old Margie Milum died in a wreck near the intersection of Highway 115 and Town Creek Road. Georgia State Patrol Gainesville Post 6 Troopers responded to the fatal crash around 1:55 p.m.

GSP says Milum was driving a 2007 Chevy Cobalt west on SR 115 when, for unknown reasons, she ran off the road, overcorrected and struck a 2018 Toyota Camry traveling in the left westbound lane. The Cobalt then spun into the eastbound lane and was struck by a 2016 Dodge Journey.

After impact, Milum’s car split in half. The front end came to an uncontrolled rest in the eastbound lane facing south. The back end of the Cobalt came to an uncontrolled rest on the west shoulder of the highway.

The driver of the Dodge Journey, 43-year-old Lawanda Thurmond of Mt. Airy, was injured in the crash along with a juvenile passenger. White County EMS transported them both to Northeast Georgia Medical Center in Gainesville with non-life threatening injuries.

The driver of the Camry, 29-year-old Josias Bautista-Maneiro of Sandy Springs, was not injured.
