Area law enforcement beefed up patrols on campuses in White and Habersham Counties Thursday following Wednesday’s fatal school shooting in Florida.
Habersham County School Superintendent Matthew Cooper says both the Georgia State Patrol and Habersham County Sheriff’s Office provided increased patrols on and around school campuses. He says the patrols are in addition to tight security measures already in place. “We maintain a high level of security in all of our schools everyday,” stresses Cooper.
White County schools also had some extra protection from the Cleveland Police Department and White County Sheriff’s Office. “We have not had threats, but wanted to help our students feel that we are watching out for them after the event in Florida,” White County School Superintendent Dr. Jeff Wilson told WRWH News.
Seventeen people died in Wednesday’s shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida. It’s one of the 10 deadliest mass shootings in modern U.S. history.
Former student and suspected shooter Nikolas Cruz is charged with 17 counts of premeditated murder. He appeared before a Broward County magistrate judge Thursday. The judge ordered the 19-year-old held without bond.
