Temperature in Clarkesville at 6:30 this morning.
An Arctic blast has hit northeast Georgia, bringing bone-chilling temperatures to the region. In Clarkesville, the thermometer outside Southern Bank and Trust says it all; the temperature dropped 13 degrees overnight between 7:30pm and 6:30am. Drive around and you’ll see different readings on different thermometers but the message is clear…it’s COLD!
Habersham County public schools are on a two-hour delay. Buses will run two hours behind schedule and students and staff are to report two hours after their normal start time.
A wind chill advisory remains in effect until noon today. The National Weather Service reports current wind chill values are widespread throughout the region, ranging from 5 below to 15 below zero. Some higher elevations in northeast Georgia are seeing wind chills as low as 20 below.
Conditions are expected to gradually improve through the daylight hours this morning.
Lowest temperatures since the cold wave last January
The Arctic air mass will persist across the region into Friday. Temperatures through the rest of the work week are forecast to run 10 to 20 degrees below normal.
A gradual warming trend is expected to begin Friday with the forecast calling for a chance of a wintry mix late Sunday on in to Monday.
