Governor Deal has proclaimed April as Child Abuse Prevention & Awareness month. Individuals or organizations interested in helping to raise awareness can participate by wearing blue on Friday, April 8. “Wear Blue Day” serves to start conversations in communities on how individuals and organizations can come together to support healthy children and strong families and prevent child maltreatment.
Prevent Child Abuse Habersham (PCAH) is organizing a social media flash mob to commemorate the event. When you wear blue please take a picture and post it to Prevent Child Abuse Habersham’s Facebook wall with the hashtags #wearblueday #pcahabersham #endchildabuse #greatchildhoods OR email your photo to [email protected] and PCAH will share it for you.
Statewide awareness campaign
This year Prevent Child Abuse Georgia is collaborating with the Georgia Division of Family and Children Services (DFCS) on several awareness activities. They’ll be distributing prevention calendars, sharing daily prevention messages through social media, and distributing pinwheels to every local county DFCS office.
In addition, more than 15,000 pinwheels will be ‘planted’ statewide by child-serving organizations such as PCAH. “Pinwheel gardens planted in communities across Georgia serve as powerful visual reminders that we all play a role in ensuring happy and healthy childhoods for all children everywhere,” states Julia Neighbors, Director of Prevent Child Abuse Georgia.

Blue metal ribbons have been placed outside Habersham Medical Center in Demorest as a reminder of Habersham County’s abuse victims. Each ribbon represents a child affected by neglect, physical, and/or sexual abuse. In addition, PCAH has planned a Community Awareness Day for Saturday, April 16th from Noon-7pm at Wilbanks Middle School in Demorest.
