Habersham EMC and other Georgia electric membership corporations are now accepting applications for college scholarships.
A scholarship committee made up of personnel from the state’s 41 EMCs will award eleven Walter Harrison Scholarships. Students can apply the $1,000 scholarship to academic expenses at any accredited two- or four-year university, college or vocational-technical institute in Georgia.
The committee will award the scholarships based on grade point averages, SAT/ACT scores, academic standing, scholastic honors, and financial need.
“We understand that the rising costs of college can cause a great deal of financial stress within a family,” says HEMC Strategy and Communications Director Nicole Dove. “Every student deserves the chance to succeed.”
Eligibility requirements
To be eligible, applicants must be accepted or enrolled in an accredited undergraduate degree program at any two or four-year university, college, or vocational-technical institute in Georgia. They must complete a two-page application and write a two-page autobiographical sketch that includes future plans.
Any college-level student, regardless of age, may apply.

Walter Harrison was a pioneer in the rural electricity movement and a leader at local, state and national levels. The Georgia EMC trade association created the scholarship program in 1985 in his honor.
Since the scholarship program began, Georgia’s EMCs have awarded more than $212,000 to 223 students.
“Our hope is to help raise another generation of great leaders through the Walter Harrison Scholarship program,” Dover says.
