For the second time this month, officials are investigating a case of a stolen vehicle found torched in Habersham County.
This latest incident involves a 1984 Chevrolet Corvette officials say was stolen in Stephens County. The car was found abandoned and burned on Skyland Drive in Cornelia on Wednesday, September 29. State investigators say the privately-owned vehicle was stolen from a Toccoa residence the previous day.
This marks at least the fourth time in four years and the second time this month that a stolen vehicle has been found abandoned and burned in Habersham County.
On September 13, a commercial construction truck was stolen in Banks County and found torched on Grant Mill Road in Alto the following day. The other cases date back to 2018 and 2020.
State fire investigators have ruled all four cases as arson and no arrests have been made. Despite the similarities, officials are investigating them as separate incidents. “At this point, we don’t see any connection with any related instances in the area,” Davis Warnell with the state fire commissioner’s office tells Now Habersham.
The State Fire Investigations Unit is assisting law enforcement in Habersham, Banks, and Stephens counties with their investigations. If you have information that could help investigators, please contact the Unit at 1-800-282-5804.
In each case, Georgia Arson Control is offering a reward of up to $10,000 for information leading to an arrest and conviction.
