There’s been another confirmed case of rabies in Clarkesville, this time on Country Creek Road in the vicinity of North Georgia Technical College.
Habersham County Animal Care and Control Director Madi Hawkins says the rabid skunk came into contact with a German Shepherd on Country Creek around midnight Friday, March 31. Animal Control Officer Wayne Higgins responded to the scene where he found the skunk dead from an apparent gunshot.
According to a witness, the skunk was “highly aggressive.”
The skunk was submitted to the State Health Department for testing on Monday, April 3. HCACC received confirmation that the specimen tested positive on April 6.
Hawkins says the dog was not current on rabies vaccines and the owner has opted to complete a 6 month isolation quarantine at home.
This is the third incidence of rabies confirmed in the Clarkesville area in the past two weeks. A rabid skunk was captured trying to crawl under a fence at Clarkesville Elementary School and a rabid raccoon was captured and killed after scratching a puppy on Chisom Trail.

The puppy was too young for vaccinations and had to be euthanized.
HCACC continues to urge Habersham residents to ensure that their pets are up to date on rabies vaccinations.
