Anna Ruby Falls Recreation Area will offer a “Made with Love” planting class on Mother’s Day, Sunday, May 7. This free, hands-on workshop is open to children ages 3-15 years. They’ll use locally-sourced logs as planters for an assortment of beautiful flowers to celebrate the special day.
The program will begin at 10 a.m. and will continue as long as supplies last. Visitors are encouraged to arrive early to ensure a spot.
Matt Summers, Assistant Manager of Anna Ruby Falls, sourced the logs on his property and saw potential for something unique. Summers used his own equipment to cut the logs, drill holes to hold soil and turn something that may have been forgotten into something that can bring joy.
“Looking around my property, I realized that there are so many ways to repurpose the trees that we needed to cut down to build our home,” Summers says. “Why not tie that in with an experience that our visitors can remember? The only cost to us is a little extra time!”
In addition to the planters, visitors and will learn about local wildflower species that are currently in bloom around the site, as well as the components of topsoil and why it’s so important to the natural ecosystem within Anna Ruby Falls.
The event is free, but donations will be accepted to benefit future educational programs at the falls.
Anna Ruby is located off State Route 356 near Unicoi State Park near Helen, Georgia.
