Demorest, GA – The Piedmont College women’s tennis team started off hot in doubles play but were swept in singles by the visiting Avenging Angels who took a 7-2 decision over the home standing Lady Lions at Burgen Tennis Courts earlier today. Meredith, who is currently in the top four of the USA South with a 5-1 record in league play, improve to 7-3 overall with the victory while Piedmont drops to 3-6 overall and is now 2-2 in USA South play.
The Lady Lions took decisions at #2 and #3 doubles with veterans Amanda Blackwell and Nicole Parrish pairing to win at the #2 spot 8-3 over Caroline Hunt and Cailin Goff. It was a pair of newcomers who combined for the win at #3 doubles as Morgan Cowart and Karina Rivera took a tight 8-6 win that put the Lady Lions up 2-1 after doubles play at Burgen.
However, despite the early lead in the match, Piedmont would drop all six singles decisions as the Avenging Angels came alive to take all six in straight sets at Burgen.
Tatiana Burkett pushed Jacqueline Benton to a tie-break in the first set, but fell in two as that was the only singles decision that saw tie-break action.
Piedmont will not have long to rest though as the Lady Lions jump right back in conference play hosting league-leading North Carolina Wesleyan College tomorrow for a Sunday morning USA South showdown. The first serve with the Battling Bishops in the March 29 match is set to drop at 10:00 am at Burgen Tennis Courts.
