With all the political arguments and divisions, I want to share what I feel about our great republic. I was fortunate to be born to a poor farm family amid the Blue Ridge Mountains in Rabun County, Georgia. I was old enough to recall some memories of World War II. My first five grades in school was attained in a one teacher school held in the small Baptist Church in this valley. I consider it a great start for my life. Much emphasis was put on teaching American history and the importance of being loyal patriots.
It was during these formative years I came to believe our nation was unique in its formation and growth as a constitutional republic. World War II changed our nation forever. An uncle, Bruce Justus and aunt, Jessie Mae, his sister, joined the WACs. Neal Justus, my dad, was helping construct dams on the Tennessee River and was exempt from military service. In high school bulletins were issued keeping us informed of the great battles in Europe and in the Pacific Ocean areas. Other wars arose in which I was involved. Indeed, we are at war today!
Something sorely lacking today is the vital importance of knowing our national roots and the exceptional nature of our freedom and form of government. Our youth need better preparation for life. There seems at times as if there is a deliberate dumbing down of our history and a trend to make our country more like those in Europe. A study of socialism or communism shows these despotic systems lead to slavery and death for millions.
I see bitterness and anger growing between the two major parties and refusal to compromise or even sit down to discuss differences. There is no relief from aggressive politics and campaigning on television and radio continues year-round. Now investigations are ongoing! If leaking secrets and other sensitive information are not immediately stopped the result will threaten our nation as a free society. The ignoring of or willful disregard of the Constitution and open borders in time of war can weaken and so divide us as a people as to hurt the economy and cause serious disorder across the country. Lets turn to more unity and high goals in 2018.
