Alto man arrested after SROs alerted of alleged family violence

An Alto man has been arrested on charges of family violence after school resource officers at Habersham Central High School alerted the sheriff’s office to the situation.

Steven Cannon, 34, of Alto, was involved in an altercation with his son that turned physical Thursday night, according to Habersham County Sheriff’s Public Information Officer Kevin Angell. SROs at the high school became aware of the alleged incident the next morning and contacted investigators. After interviewing witnesses, investigators arrested the boy’s father.

Cannon was taken into custody and booked at the Habersham County Detention Center. He’s charged with simple battery under the Georgia Family Violence Act, a misdemeanor. A judge set his bond at $1,420, online records show.

The case remains under investigation and Angell says more witnesses are expected to be interviewed.

“This case was discovered by the excellent relationship between our SRO program and school administrators,” Angell tells Now Habersham. “This wasn’t something where our deputies responded to the scene, but it’s because of that close relationship between our SROs and school administrators.”
