The town of Alto has lifted its emergency order restricting water distributions to commercial and industrial properties.

“We have lifted our water state of emergency as of today at 9 a.m.,” says Alto Mayor PJ Huggins in an email received December 30 from City Hall. “We should continue to recover over the weekend.”

The mayor declared a public health and safety state of emergency Wednesday after two major water leaks at the Phoenix Alto Industrial complex over Christmas weekend. The leaks at the property, previously occupied by Mt. Vernon Mills, drained the town’s reservoir.

On Thursday, Alto Public Works/Water Supervisor Gary Kimbral said the town’s water supply is “recovering, but slowly.” Since then, town clerk Penny Rogers says there have been some developments.

“Demorest was able to let us turn on our connection with them so that helped a lot,” Rogers says. In addition, she says public works crews “continued to ride around looking for busted lines, and the residents that have ruptured lines have fixed them.”

“The tanks are slowly recovering and should continue over the weekend,” Rogers adds.
