An Air Force airman got in trouble with the law while home on leave in Georgia.

According to police, a homeowner caught 26-year-old Timothy Whitfield Herndon exiting the basement of his home at 193 Lavista Lane on the evening of May 30. The homeowner, Jacob Samples, chased down Herndon, pinned him to the ground, and called 911, says Cornelia Police Chief Jonathan Roberts.

“Dispatch was only able to advise a location and could hear a male voice ‘screaming for help,'” says Roberts. “Officer Maney spoke with a pedestrian near the city of Cornelia Dog Park that stated there were two males over in the wood line and appeared to be fighting.”

When the Cornelia police officer went into the wood line behind Samples’ house, he found Samples on top of Herndon.

Police arrested Herndon and charged him with first-degree burglary. Officers booked him at the Habersham County Detention Center. He was later released from jail on a $2,300 bond.

During the course of the investigation, officers discovered Herndon was on military leave from Beale Air Force Base in California. Chief Roberts says a CPD investigator contacted Herndon’s First Sergeant and the Military Police at the base and informed them of the arrest.
