AAA: Record 19 million Americans projected to cruise in 2025

(AAA)

In a first for AAA, the company has unveiled a cruise forecast for the year ahead, similar to the travel outlooks it provides for major holidays. This report, which looks at the number of U.S. residents taking ocean cruises, is set to shed light on the growing trend of cruising as a popular vacation choice.

2025 cruise outlook: ‘Record numbers ahead’

For the third consecutive year, cruise travel volumes are set to hit a record high. In fact, AAA predicts that 19 million Americans will set sail on ocean cruises in 2025. This marks a 4.5% increase over 2024, when 18.2 million Americans enjoyed a cruise vacation. To put that in perspective, it’s a staggering 34% growth over the pre-pandemic peak of 14.2 million in 2019.

“The cruise industry’s focus on bigger ships, shorter itineraries, and private islands has contributed to remarkable growth in recent years,” said Debbie Haas, Vice President of Travel for AAA – The Auto Club Group. “Cruise lines have introduced larger ships that accommodate more guests, while offering an impressive range of onboard amenities. Today, the ship itself can be a destination, with many vessels offering short 3–4-night itineraries that allow for more frequent sailings, as well as the chance to visit a private island.”

Economic Drivers

In 2025, the outlook for travel remains positive. Most economic indicators suggest continued growth in incomes and spending, and surveys reveal that the desire to travel remains strong among consumers. With travel being a top priority for many, it’s clear that cruising will continue to be an attractive option for vacationers.

The combination of increased disposable income, evolving cruise offerings and an ongoing passion for travel suggests that 2025 will be another banner year for the cruise industry, according to AAA.
