Baldwin residents are facing a possible 3% increase in water and sewer costs and a 9% increase in trash rates. During the council’s work session on Tuesday, July 9, they discussed a resolution raising the rates.
Baldwin’s Chief Administrative Officer, Emily Woodmaster, explained that the increase is needed due to population growth and the bond requirement to maintain the rate increase for water and sewer. The trash rate of 9% is due to an increase in the cost by FC Sanitation a company based in Stephens County.
Councilmember Alice Venter explained that approximately four to five years ago, there was a 20% increase because the city had gone 12 years without an increase in cost. Venter said it is important for the community to understand what goes into producing and maintaining water and why the increase is necessary to prevent future councils from increasing costs as dramatically as before.
The council will vote on the proposal at their next meeting on Monday, July 15.
Speed bumps needed
The Baldwin City Council said new speed bumps for the Highland Pointe area will need to be purchased. The approximate cost is $1,764, but that does not include the shipping cost.
Subdivision residents are concerned about speeding in the neighborhood. They petitioned the council to install speed bumps for their safety. Baldwin’s Chief Administrator, Emily Woodmaster, proposed the council use public safety funds to purchase the speed bumps. She said it is a top priority for the city of Baldwin.
