A Superstar

Sunday I watched the Praise and Worship Band on the platform at my church. I love music. Even more, I love worship. While I normally feel excited about the atmosphere, I suddenly felt a tinge of resentment – if only I had a voice to sing.

I used to stand at my full-length mirror, holding a hair brush in one hand, sporting a pair of Go-Go Boots and Bell Bottom Jeans with red hearts, singing my lungs off. That’s right. I was going to be a superstar – and not just any superstar – Karen Carpenter.

To this day, if there is Karaoke, I pick “We’ve Only Just Begun” because I can straight sing it just like her. (At least that’s what I tell myself!)

If only I had the voice – WHEW! – could I ever get some praise and worship on! Watch out world!

We all have those unfulfilled dreams from childhood. Maybe you were going to become a professional baseball player or a concert pianist or a lawyer or a movie star. Today, you are no where near your dreams, looking at your life wondering where you went wrong.

The reality is, God has given each of us very specific giftings to use for His benefit. He has put passions in our hearts for reasons we cannot understand and don’t need to understand. And the gift you received and the gift I received may not be the dream we wanted.

This verse came to mind as I grumbled to God, “Because the foolishness of God is wiser than men, and the weakness of God is stronger than men” 1 Corinthians 1:25. It actually made me laugh for even the wisest man is no where near a match for my God and the strongest man is no where near my God’s weakness.

And I began to sing, like the little girl in front of the mirror holding the hair brush, to my God. For to Him, I am a superstar. To Him, my voice is beautifully made simply to Praise HIM.
