The Northeast Georgia Animal Shelter is hosting a delicious steak and egg fundraiser. They ask you to bring your appetites for a perfect time at Longhorn Steakhouse at 13640 Jones Street, Lavonia, on Saturday, July 13.

The menu will include steak, eggs, biscuits, grits, orange juice, coffee, and tea. There are two opportunities to enjoy breakfast; one seating is at 8 a.m. and the second at 9 a.m.

Longhorn’s is hosting the event to help cover costs for the shelter which serves the animals of Hart and Franklin Counties. Recently, the Northeast Georgia Animal Shelter completed a new building that is designated as the Adoption Center. Michelle Van Hemert Branton has been on the Executive Board of the Animal Shelter for over ten years. Helping animals is a passion for her, and as a realtor, Van Hemert Branton donates not only her time but a percentage of her commissions for the care of the animals.

“As a public shelter, we have some tough cases that come to us. Because we are a rural shelter, we naturally will have more animals,” Michelle explained.

The Adoption Center will be separate from the intake center which is important for the health of those animals who are ready to be adopted. “One Parvo case in an animal coming into the shelter can shut everything down. This way, we can protect those animals that do not have to be exposed,” Van Hemert Branton added. Parvo is a highly contagious disease in dogs, which can be fatal.

The Northeast Georgia Animal Shelter maintains an 80% to 85% save rate, which puts them on the edge of being a no-kill shelter, Van Hemert Branton said.

Hart and Franklin County do charge fees for the animal services that are provided to the municipalities within the counties; however, this does not cover all the expenses. The shelter raised money to build the new Adoption Center through huge fundraisers.

The Steak & Egg Fundraiser will benefit the cost of taking care of all the animals at the shelter.

Tickets can be purchased at Longhorn Steakhouse, local Pinnacle Bank branches, and the Northeast Georgia Animal Shelter at 870 Bear Creek Road in Lavonia. The cost is $20 per plate. This includes an additional appetizer card.

There are other opportunities to donate as well. Please call (706) 356-5363 for more details.
