Parents of special needs children know how difficult it can be to enjoy Christmas outings. The Crowds, lights, and noise can turn otherwise typical fun family excursions into anxiety-ridden events. That’s why some local parents have coordinated A Night with Santa for Special Needs Families.
The event will be held tonight, Tuesday, December 6, 2016, at 6 p.m. at the Ruby Fulbright Aquatic Center in Clarkesville.
Rhonda Stamey is the Challenger Coordinator for her son’s baseball team. The Challenger League is a division of Little League for special needs kids. Stamey is organizing the event with the help of other team parents. “It is sometimes hard for us to take our kids to see Santa at the malls or other public places because not all of our kids can wait in long lines or handle crowds without being over stimulated,” she explains. “This way, we can accommodate each person’s needs.”
Each family attending tonight’s event will receive two free photos with Santa. Additional photos may be purchased, as well. There will be refreshments and games, too.
“I wanted to do it because I want all our special need families to know that we support them,” says Stamey. I have a special needs son myself and I love doing things to let them know just how special they are.”
The event is free and open to the public.
