Celebrate ‘A Downtown Clarkesville Christmas’

Celebrating the season in downtown Clarkesville is now set for 5 p.m. today.

City officials invite residents and visitors to make plans to attend A Downtown Clarkesville Christmas, postponed due to the winter storm that impacted the region on Dec. 8.

Hosted by the City of Clarkesville, Clarkesville Main Street and the Clarkesville Business and Community Association, the evening is a time for families and friends to gather downtown to savor a sense of community.
Visits with Santa will start at 5 p.m. and the annual tree lighting is set for 6 p.m.

Mayor Barrie Aycock invites the community to join her for the city’s ceremonial start to the season.
“Saturday, Dec. 15 will be an event-packed day,” Aycock said, with the county’s Bicentennial Birthday Party and Christmas in the Park taking place in Cornelia. (The Habersham County Christmas Parade has been postponed until 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 18).

“We hope our community will come and spend the day celebrating,” Aycock said.

The city is sponsoring free photographs with Santa and the Clarkesville Kiwanis Club will have hot chocolate and other goodies available for a nominal fee, according to Clarkesville City Manager Barbara Kesler.

The Windows at Woods event has been canceled this year, but all other activities will proceed as planned.

“The downtown business district is dressed up and ready to welcome guests; everything looks great on the square and throughout our downtown,” Kesler said. “Our business owners have done a great job adding festive elements to the lights and wreaths already on display.”

Extended hours for downtown shopping will encourage those in attendance to shop local, Kesler said.
“We invite everyone to join us for a generous portion of Christmas cheer,” she said.

Photos with Santa will be posted to the city’s Facebook page after Dec. 18.
