It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas. Lights are going up all over town and plans are underway for A Downtown Clarkesville Christmas.
This year’s community-wide celebration and tree lighting takes place Saturday, December 12th from 6-8 p.m.
The event is being hosted by Main Street Clarkesville as a way to celebrate the holidays and encourage the community to shop locally. Organizers say a variety of activities and entertainment are scheduled to help put people in the Christmas spirit as they shop, dine and play downtown.
“Clarkesville Main Street created this event several years ago, and feedback has been positive both from downtown businesses and event attendees,” says event volunteer and Main Street Board member Claudia Lyle. “Our main goal is really to encourage people to stay local and support local businesses during the holiday season.”
Lyle says A Downtown Clarkesville Christmas is a good way for adults to recapture the magic they felt as kids during Christmas. “Many might remember going ‘downtown’ as a child during the Christmas season and we’re looking to recreate that nostalgic feeling,” she says.

Schedule of events
A Downtown Clarkesville Christmas kicks off December 12th at 6 p.m. with the tree lighting at the Clarkesville gazebo followed by the “Elves on our Shelves” gift basket drawing. The rest of the evening’s schedule shapes up like this:
- 6:05PM Bethlehem Baptist Church Senior Choir
- 6:30PM KIPS Crew Chorus- Clarkesville Elementary
- 6:30PM Windows at Woods live theatrical performance – Woods Furniture (ends@7:15PM)
- 7:00PM Clarkesville First United Methodist Church Children’s Nativity Pageant
- 7:30PM Shady Grove Baptist Church Gospel Choir
Throughout the evening there will be FREE Santa photos in the gazebo, a Live Nativity by local church youth groups, hot cocoa & cider provided by the Junior Main Street Board, reindeer food and mistletoe, a bonfire with s’mores, roving carolers on the square and downtown shops will be open late.
