Angel Rushing started making cakes for her children’s birthdays about 22 years ago. About 6 years ago, she started watching food network TV shows such as Ace of Cakes and Cake Boss and she got inspired. She started what she calls her “fancy” cakes. Sculpted with different icings, fondant and other materials, Rushing makes art with her cake materials. Several weeks ago, she came across a new contest. She entered with the fall-themed cake pictured above. The first phase of the contest was based on popular votes. People would log on to the web site and vote for their favorite cake. The top five vote getters were then entered into the final stage of the contest. In this stage, the final five cakes were judged by Food Network stars, Jorg Amsler and Dawn Parrot. The judges only saw the cakes themselves, not the votes and judged them purely on the cake’s merits. Rushing placed second earning over $600 dollars worth of tools, supplies and online classs. While this is not the first time Rushing has won a cake contest, this is the first time that the cake was judged by such accomplished judges.
Angel has spent the past several years crafting her hobby cakes and working with her parents at Shooks’ Family Farm. She helped her parents with the farm and took the produce and her father’s award -winning honey to farmer’s markets in Gainesville. This year, her parents have decided to take a break from the farm, leaving Rushing with more time to hone her talent. Her cakes can be seen on her facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/angel.cakes.9889 She and her husband Steve have three children and one grandchild and live in Clarkesville.
