PC Lions in national spotlight

Minneapolis, MN – Following Tuesday night’s upset of the 6th ranked Emory Eagles, the Piedmont College Men’s Basketball team is earning national recognition for their impressive victory. The game recap originally published on PiedmontLions.com that told the story of the Lions’ upset was picked up later Tuesday evening by D3hoops.com for publication on the front page as one of the top stories for Wednesday.

The Lions pulled off one of the most impressive victories in recent memory for the men’s basketball team, defeating a top-ten ranked team for the first time inside Cave Arena, shocking the Eagles and spoiling Emory’s unblemished record. The 87-85 victory for the Lions moved them to 3-1 this season with the only loss coming at the hands of Division I Presbyterian College to begin the year.

The story can be seen on D3hoops.com under the title “Piedmont Stuns 6th Ranked Emory” as the Lions earned a spot on the front page. The star of Tuesday’s contest was sophomore Trae Gaines who had a stellar performance scoring 21 of Piedmont’s 27 points off the bench and doing so in only 24 minutes on the court.

Gaines’ contribution was crucial but it was the defense that stood the test in the final 17 seconds of the game to seal the victory for the Lions. The Eagles had the opportunity to get off two 3-pointers in those final moments of the contest but neither connected and the Lions were surrounded by the Cave Crazies on the court to celebrate the historic victory inside Cave Arena.

The Lions are now averaging 80 points per game and giving up just 76.5 per game to the opponent. Four Lions currently average over 10 points per contest with Chase England leading the charge with 16.5 per game.
