With five men on the ballot the race for the 9th Congressional District seat could well have ended in a runoff but it didn’t. In fact, it was far from it.
Incumbent Republican Congressman Doug Collins easily defeated his four challengers, claiming 52,043 votes to their combined total of 32,896.
Collins’ win with 61.27% clinches his spot on the GOP ticket in November and an all but certain return to Congress next year, barring a successful third party bid in the General Election.
The 9th District includes the following North Georgia counties: Banks, Dawson, Elbert, Fannin, Franklin, Gilmer, Habersham, Hall, Hart, Jackson, Lumpkin, Madison, Rabun, Stephens, Towns, Union and White. Also portions of Clarke, Forsyth and Pickens.
Here’s how the vote broke down district-wide:
Paul C. Broun – 18,761 votes | 22.09%
Doug Collins (I) – 52,043 votes | 61.27%
Roger Fitzpatrick – 8,943 votes | 10.53%
Bernie Fontaine – 2,338 votes | 2.75%
Mike Scupin – 2,854 votes | 3.36%
