“…folks can be assured in the White County School System we are not having boys and girls sharing bathrooms right now and we certainly will respect the rights of a student that is struggling with their gender.” ~ Dr. Jeff Wilson
(Cleveland)- Last Friday, schools systems across the nation, including White County Public Charter School System, received a letter from representatives of the U.S. Department of Justice and the U.S. Department of Education providing guidance on how public school systems receiving federal funds should recognize the rights of transgender students. White County School System is addressing this issue, speaking on Local News Radio (1350AM, Cleveland, GA) Thursday, White County Superintendent of Schools Dr. Jeff Wilson talked about it.
Wilson said they have not had a flood of calls from parents like some other systems, he also said “ as of right now we have not had that issue brought up by any student, we certainly respect the rights of every student and for the rest of this school year if it becomes an issue and if a student is uncomfortable not going into their biological bathroom for some gender issue that they are dealing with we certainly will provide them something outside that, our philosophy continues to be we are going to let children go into the biological bathroom that they are made for.”
Wilson said the they have some ideas they are looking at for the future but right now our school system will treat every student with dignity and respect “folks can be assured in White County School System we are not having boys and girls sharing bathrooms right now and we certainly will respect the rights of a student that is struggling with their gender.”
Dr. Wilson also said at this point, there remains a question to what, if any, force of law the letter carries. “I believe these issues will ultimately be decided in Congress and in the courts.”
