It’s been more than two years since fire swept through the east side of Clarkesville’s city square. Since then, the buildings have been cleaned up and stabilized but there’s been little other outward change to the fire damaged buildings. That’s about to change.
On Tuesday, April 5, Clarkesville city officials will hold a “groundbreaking” ceremony for the rebuilding of the fire damaged buildings.

Mayor Barrie Aycock encourages the public to come out and celebrate “this important occasion.”
“This project has taken us two years to get to the point of beginning construction,” says Aycock. “Additional pre-construction work still needs to be done before the serious demolition and reconstruction can begin, but we are very close to finally getting underway.”
The ceremony is scheduled to begin at 6 p.m. on April 5th at the construction site on the downtown square.
