Georgia Department of Transportation crews are preparing for snowy and icy weather in Northwest and Northeast Georgia.
According to Metro District Communications Officer, Annalysce Baker, GDOT will begin applying a brine treatment to some state routes and interstates in North Georgia this evening.
Baker says, “We are concerned about all of the roads particularly our interstates. We want to keep the interstates passable for emergency response. We plan to treat SR 515 in Union County.”
She urges drivers to pay close attention to weather reports and wait for daylight before driving on area roadways if at all possible. “If a motorists drives on an icy patch, try not panic and do not slam on your brakes,” advises Baker. “Allow your car to coast. We also advise motorists to drive half of their normal speed.”
If you encounter a GDOT crew while driving, Baker says you should give the trucks enough space (behind, on the sides, and in front) to apply the brine mixture or salt and gravel to the roads.
