Demorest Council Members Sworn-In

A political mainstay and a political comeback, that’s what people witnessed during swearing-in ceremonies at the Demorest City Council on January 12, 2016.

John Popham took his seat on the council just one week after being re-elected to his eleventh term. Popham won a re-vote with fellow incumbent Donnie Bennett on January 5. The special election was called after a superior court judge threw out the results of the November election due to a voting error in which one voter was mistakenly allowed to vote twice.

Florence Wikle returns to the Demorest City Council after a two year hiatus. She was defeated in November 2013 but made a political comeback in November 2015, winning one of two open at-large seats by the widest margin of voters.
