Randall John “Randy” Mateling

Randall “Randy” John Mateling, age 66 of Cornelia, passed away Sunday, November 29, 2015, at his residence.

Born in Chicago, Illinois on November 19, 1949, he was a son of the late Harry John Mateling and Shirley Ann Piper Mateling. In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by two siblings, Michele Ann Mateling Maloney and Donald Peter Mateling.

Always tall for his age, Randy was an All American All Star Basketball team member and was awarded a scholarship to the University of Georgia. He also participated in Boys State in Illinois. A lifelong Republican, he was always very active in local politics.

Randy was a very accomplished artist and began his art teaching career in 1973 in Newton County, Georgia. He taught at Our Shepherd’s Christian Academy in Stone Mountain for 12 years. He also taught in Rockdale County (Conyers) and retired from there in June, 2006.

Throughout his life, Randy was an active Boy Scout leader and Scoutmaster, Crew Chief, and Order of Arrow Advisor. He encouraged and supported his children, Joel and Kari’s love of all sports including basketball and track. He was also involved in coaching and served as Yearbook Advisor in many schools. His students loved this Gentle Giant.

He leaves behind his wife, Marcia; son, Joel (Kimberly); daughter, Kari; grandchildren, Abbygale, Waylen, and Annslee; sister, Dawn Ellen Kusta (Dave).

A memorial service will be held at his home in Cornelia, Georgia on Sunday, December 6, 2015.
