Volunteers For Literacy of Habersham County (VFL) is pleased to announce that Turnerville resident Phylecia Wilson has joined the group as director/coordinator. In that position, Wilson will work with VFL board members to help residents in Habersham County to lead more productive and fulfilling lives through literacy programs.
“Phylecia comes to us with a world of experience in special events, fundraising and non-profits,” said Shelby Ward, VFL president and Dean for Adult Education at North Georgia Technical College (NGTC). “We are excited that she is on board.”
VFL is a non-profit United Way agency that develops and supports literacy programs in Habersham County. It was established in 1989 through a partnership with NGTC and began as an adult literacy tutoring service. Today VFL serves Habersham County residents of all ages through three signature programs: Read to Succeed, English as a Second Language and GED Scholarships.
A ten-year resident of Habersham County, Wilson lived previously in Gwinnett County where she started and for four years chaired the American Cancer Society Gwinnett Relay For Life (RFL), which is the largest Relay in the world and raises in excess of $1.5 million dollars every year. She is a volunteer trainer for RFL and has trained thousands across the country and globally. She is the recipient of several ACS national awards, including the Volunteer Leadership Award (2008), Relay For Life Hall of Fame (2001) and ACS Cancer Action Network Volunteer Award for Excellence in Advocacy (2010).
While in Gwinnett, Wilson also chaired the Gwinnett County Parks and Recreation Authority for 8 years and served on the Gwinnett Clean and Beautiful Board for more than a decade. She was named Citizen of the Year by the Gwinnett Chamber of Commerce in 2002.
A Georgia State University graduate, with a degree in communication/public relations, she has worked in sales, public relations and marketing. She currently is the Director of Christian Education at First Presbyterian Church of Clarkesville.
“I am delighted to be affiliated with VFL and look forward to working with the board and community volunteers to expand literacy services,” Wilson said.
