God the Artist

Today’s devotional is written by Shawn Enright of Dahlonega, Georgia.

Psalm 139:13-16

“For You formed my inward parts; You knitted me together in my mother’s womb. I praise You, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made. Wonderful are Your works; my soul knows it very well. My frame was not hidden from You, when I was being made in secret, intricately woven in the depths of the earth. Your eyes saw my unformed substance; in Your book were written, every one of them, the days that were formed for me, when as yet there was none of them.”

How beautiful is His word when it says “You knitted me together…intricately woven in the depths of the earth…I am fearfully and wonderfully made.”

WOW. Do you understand that? Truly?

God, with His delicate hands, knitted every fiber of your being.  Not a machine, the Creator of the entire universe.  Chance did not create you, God did.  He who created sunsets dusted with orange and yellow.  From the shoreline of beaches where the water kisses your feet, to the heavens peppered with stars.  God spent just as much time creating Angel Falls as He did deciding the color of your eyes.

I like to think of God as a mix between Leonardo Di Vinci and Pablo Picasso.  Imagine God standing in front of a white canvas and deciding, “I am going to create Shawn.”

Now, He has all the skills the grandest of artists to ever live had (hint: He created them).  So He picks up His brush and begins His most beautiful creation yet.  When He sculpted us, He knew EXACTLY what He was doing.  How comforting is that?

God doesn’t use erasers; He paints with everlasting ink, permanently placing freckles, crooked teeth and hazel eyes.  God may have chosen to give you the soft smile of Mona Lisa and the nose from a Picasso painting, but nevertheless they where handcrafted by our Creator.  But do we live as if God’s signature is written on each of our hearts? Or do we defile God’s masterpieces by comparing ourselves to each other?

“I don’t have pretty eyes like she does.”

“I don’t have biceps like he does.”

Spoiler: You’re not supposed to.

To look in the mirror and chastise oneself, inward or outwardly, is to discredit the handiwork of God.

Friends, you are a creation, masterfully designed, crafted in space and time, rosy cheeks and widow’s peeks, as pure as a dove, you were made out of love.  I believe when God deemed all His creation good, He meant it.

Acceptance is one of the hardest things you and I will ever have to do.  Especially in the 21st century where billboards read, “Don’t like it? Change it!”

We must acknowledge who we are.  Yes, we are sinners.  Boy-oh-boy are we sinners.  But God knows that.  He uses our depravity to display His divinity.  Our sinfulness is the psychical canvas He paints His most wonderful works on.
