
Forbes has released its annual list of the best places to retire in the United States, and Athens, Georgia, is among the top 25. The list, which compares over 950 locations, considers factors such as housing costs, taxes, healthcare, air quality, crime, climate change, and natural hazard risk.
Athens, known for its vibrant college town atmosphere and proximity to Atlanta, boasts a median home price of $333,000, significantly lower than the national median. The cost of living in Athens, GA, is 12% below the national average, making it an affordable option for retirees.
According to Forbes, Athens offers retirees a number of advantages, including an agreeable climate, good air quality, and a strong cultural scene.
A traditional college town with a population of 130,000, Athens is located 70 miles east of Atlanta and is home to the University of Georgia. Additionally, Athens has a relatively low risk of natural hazards according to FEMA. Athens also has a good retiree tax climate with a flat state income tax rate of 5.39% after a $24,000 standard deduction.
Forbes lists among Athens’ negative traits a “Serious crime rate somewhat above the national average.” The magazine also notes that the city is “not very walkable.”
Other Southern cities that made the list of best places to retire include Savannah and Greenville, South Carolina. Raleigh, North Carolina, also ranked highly due to its strong economy, good healthcare, and moderate climate.
