With approval from Clarkesville City Council Monday, May 5, people could face potential fines or even arrest for camping on public property.

Clarkesville City Manager Keith Dickerson said this has been an ongoing issue in the past, with certain individuals camping in areas of Sam Pitts Park.

According to the ordinance, violators could face a citation or, if necessary, a misdemeanor charge under the law and potential time in jail.

With churches and charity groups active throughout Clarkesville, Dickerson said such violations have become far less frequent in recent years.

The ordinance was unanimously approved by council Monday and takes effect immediately.
